Hiring a tipper truck should be straightforward. In practice, it's often a phone-around that takes half a morning, ends in a quote that doesn't reflect the actual job, and leaves you hoping the driver has the right licence for what you're moving.
This guide covers the basics: vehicle types, how to specify a job properly, what compliance to check before you book, and what you should expect to pay.
Types of tipper truck
Not all tippers are the same. The right vehicle depends on your payload, access constraints, material type and loading method.
8-wheel rigid tipper
The most common tipper on UK sites. Typically 20–30 tonne payload. Good manoeuvrability for tight sites, able to access most areas an artic cannot. Used for aggregates, muck-away, recycled material and most bulk loose loads.
Artic (articulated) tipper
Tractor unit plus semi-trailer with tip body. 30–40 tonne payloads. Better value per tonne on long runs and open sites. Requires more turning space and careful planning for site access.
Grab lorry
A tipper with a hydraulic grab arm that loads itself. Ideal when you don't have a 360-degree excavator available. Payloads of 10–18 tonnes. Perfect for loose material — sub-base, topsoil, sand — where access allows.
Roll-on roll-off (RoRo) skip
Demountable skips for phased removal. 10–40 tonne capacities. Better for long-duration sites where you fill gradually. EA registration required for waste.
How to specify the job
A vague brief leads to a wrong quote and a dispute on the day. Give the haulier these details:
- Material type and classification (inert, non-hazardous, hazardous)
- Approximate tonnes or number of loads
- Collection address and loading method (tipping bay, excavator loading, grab)
- Delivery address and any site access restrictions (height, weight, turning radius)
- Required timing — date, time window, urgency
- Whether a waste transfer note (WTN) is required
Compliance to check
Before a haulier moves your material, you have a legal Duty of Care (EPA 1990 s.34) to ensure they are properly licensed. At minimum:
Operator Licence (O-Licence)
Mandatory for any commercial vehicle over 3.5t GVW. Issued by the Traffic Commissioner. Verify the licence number at vehicle-enquiry.service.gov.uk.
Public liability insurance
Ask for a certificate confirming cover is in place. Minimum £1m is standard, £5m+ for larger site operations.
Waste Carrier Registration
Required under EPA 1990 if your material is classified as waste — even inert soil. Verify at wastecarriersbrokers.environment-agency.gov.uk.
